Divisibility Rule of 9 with Examples | Check Divisibility by 9

In this article, we will learn about divisibility rule of 9 with example. i.e. We will see how to check if any number is divisible by 9 or not.

What is Divisibility Rule of 9 ?

A number is divisible by 9 if the sum of the digits of that number is divisible by 9.

Example 1

Check if 675 is divisible by 9 or not.
Solution:

We need to check the sum of digits of given number 675 is divisible by 9 or not. Here, given number is 675 and it’s sum is 6 + 7 + 5 = 18, which is divisible by 9. So, 675 is divisible by 9.

Example 2

Check if 163 is divisible by 9 or not.
Solution:

We need to check the sum of digits of given number 163 is divisible by 9 or not. Here, given number is 163 and it’s sum is 1 + 6 + 3 = 10, which is not divisible by 9. So, given number 163 is not divisible by 9.

Example 3

Is 9732 divisible by 9 ?
Solution:

We need to check the sum of digits of given number 163 is divisible by 9 or not. Here, given number is 9732 and it’s sum is 9 + 7 + 3 + 2 = 21, which is divisible by 9. So, given number 9732 is divisible by 9.

Example 4

Fill the lowest possible digit in the blank space so that number is divisible by 9

  1. 875_2
Solution: As per divisibility rule of 9, any number is divisible by 9 if it’s sum of all digit is divisible by 9.
Here, sum of digits of 8752 is 8 + 7 + 5 + 2 = 22, we can add 5 in palace of blank so that number is divisible by 9. 22 + 5 = 27 and 27 is divisible by 9. So, lowest possible digit is 5. Thus, number will be 87552.
